Updates!

On Sunday, my host sister, Mari Cris, and I went to the soccer game, courtesy of complementary tickets from her boyfriend, who plays on the junior team. Puebla FC is a lot like the Bills. Everyone loves them, they have had glorious days in the past, but recent bad ownership has left them in rebuilding mode. The game was really great though, imagine a Bills game with drums and a repetoire of 5 or so songs. To add to that, imagine 50 Coneheads running around trying to get your attention and sell your stuff, and you´ve pretty much got the experience. Really a great time and cultural experience.

Today, Monday, was my first day of school! Apparently I´m not attending San diego School, instead I´m going to La Prepa Iberoamerica, a prep school for the university of the same name. The schools, at least the private schools, here are all very modern. It was a small miracle when I walked in, because, despite being misdirected several times, I arrived at the school´s cafe to find three other foreigners and a techer waiting for me. Tomas from Slovakia, Sara from Brazil and Yan from Taiwan are my compadres.

Arrival and first day!

Buffalo to Chicago to Mexico City sounds simple enough, but it was definitely an interesting journey. The transition began and my real destination became infintely more real while on the plane to DF, the little girl next to me asked me questions about stuff that was going on outside the window, and I couldn´t really give her any meaningful answer. Her dad spoke a little bit of English, but it was still relatively rattling. Despite this, nothing compared to how overwhelming Benito Juárez airport was. I have never been more thankful for the pictures that accompany all of the signs in the airport. After bumbling through immigration and customs, I finally met up with the De Lara Cañedo family, ¡un milagro! We got all settled at the house after a beautiful drive through some dormant volcanoes, and then departed for Huamantla, a village about 45 minutes away, for an annual festival. I happened to forget my camera, but I´ll see if I can get some from the family camera, because it was unreal.

More on that later, but for now, we are about to leave for a Puebla FC soccer game! ¡Chao!
